IMAGES OF QUILTS IN EXHIBIT

Navajo Still Life
This is a group of Navajo themed items.  A Navajo Wedding Basket, a hand made and painted pot, and a pair of moccasins with stitched designs and ribbon embroidered laces.  The feathers and corn are heavily thread painted

Catch of the Day
This bear was originally on another quilt called Force of Nature from years ago.  I decided to improve on it and turn it into a miniature quilt.

Visions of Fairy Tales Danced in My Head
This is my autobiographical quilt of myself as a little girl.  I loved fairy tales and would often sneak a flashlight to bed to read them at night.  The only thing that's not true is my dog Fluffy in bed with me.  Mom wouldn't allow that! There are six fairy tales in this quilt. Can you name the all?

Where the Buffalo Roamed
This is the story of tens of millions of Buffalo that roamed our Western Plains and were hunted almost to extinction by settlers for the hides and to help eliminate the Indians who survived on these massive animals.  The transparent buffalo in the background represent their spirits.

Mahala
I have a friend whose grandmother was a Cherokee tribal chief named Mahala.  This is a quilt inspired by this woman.  I surrounded her with multiple heavily embellished dreamcatchers.  I had fun decorating her hair with machine embroidered peacock feathers and beaded trim on her shirt.

Force of Nature
This work shows a Native American surrounded by many of the animals which he would have encountered during his time.  I used the color wheel to design the circle of points surrounding him as well as the virtual curved border around the edge of the quilt. He wears a medallion on his shirt that is made of braided leather strips.

Cherokee Dreams
This is a floating landscape of a Cherokee Indian horse.  The negative space around him is filled with various designs of dream catchers done in a trapunto style (with extra batting) to make them stand out in the background.

A Peaceable Kingdom
This was a fun quilt trying to include as many animals as possible which would not normally be together, and positioning some in a fanciful way.

Eagle Eyes
This quilt could be a little unsettling since it feels like you're standing eye to eye with this magnificent animal.  This was one my first totally painted quilts.

Beauty of the Beast
I've always loved horses and when we lived in Oklahoma, which is quarter horse country, we had a few and enjoyed trail riding.  This is my view of a family, Dad tall and proud, Mom protective of her baby, and a cute colt with a combination of the colors from both.

The One That Got Away
We had a Jack Russell named Bud who was a squirrel chaser.  He could jump pretty high, but the squirrel alway went higher.  I had to give him credit for never giving up.

 Wrapped in Love
My granddaughter Janelle is involved with a "Save the Elephants" group and it got me thinking about an elephant family.  Elephants have families, the oldest female is usually the leader of the herd.  They actually babysit for other mothers.  I thought this was a sweet representation of affection and protection for the baby.

Work in Progress
I had this great picture of 3 of my grandkids: Piper,Coco, and Jagger.  I always thought it would make a great quilt. For years I had also been thinking of a project that had a painting in progress on an easil in a studio setting, but I was struggling with what the painting should be. I realized I could combine the two ideas and use the photo for the work of art.

The Kiss
This is a Good Ole Boy quilt. A man, his dog, a pickup truck, and his horse.  They are Hangin' out on a sandy gravel road out in the fields.  This quilt started with a painting I saw in a gallery with a row of men's worn boots resting on a truck tailgate.  I don't remember the artist but it just stuck in my mind, and this is what it became.  Had some fun quilting the mountains with a saying we see on the roads here: Don't Mess With Texas!

Kema After Hours
Over the years we have had many boats moored in Kemah, Texas.  Our favorites were sailboats.  We enjoyed many nights listening to the wind in the rigging, and the gentle rocking of the waves.

PAINTED LADIES
This is a steep street with vintage style colorful homes called "Painted Ladies" typical of San Francisco. The cable car is a fun method of transportation and the skyline was necessary to include the Gold Gate Bridge and some of the things that make San Francisco so special.

Reimagine
I "reimagined" an illustration by Alphonse Mucha.  The original was a cropped picture of a woman on a bicycle that I expanded to show the complete image. Then I surrounded it with a background of typical Art Nouveau images and designs typical of the era.
